The World Teachers' Prize aims to bring closer the esteem of a profession that remains chronically undervalued, inadequately paid and words like "those who cannot teach" reinforce the message that the world does not value the men and women who educate our children on a daily basis. Despite the lack of validation, many dedicated teachers continue to do great work.
The lack of prestige of teachers is only one of the many problems affecting education systems around the world. It is one of the issues often discussed at the "GK". Every March, educators, policy makers, prime ministers, presidents and international opinion leaders gather in Dubai for a conference that has come to be regarded as the Davos of education.
Last year, the conference concluded with "Sunny Varkey" announcing the award of a teacher's prize as a Nobel, operating under the patronage of the ruler of Dubai: His Highness "Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. "We want to inspire children from remote villages, towns and cities around the world to say" I want that award! '" said Varkey, "How many kids say they want to be a TV star? We go to them with the goal of being the best teacher in the world. At that time, "Bill Clinton" (who holds the position of Honorary Chairman of the Varkey GEMS Foundation), echoed the sentiment of "Varkey," saying, "We attract the best teaching professionals, developing and supporting their skills along with celebrating our teachers as they are all vitally important to achieving excellence in both teaching and learning.
Out of thousands of applications and nominations, the judges have narrowed it down to a small list of ten teachers. This list was distributed to Academy members for the Global Teacher Award where they will each be able to vote to choose the winner.
Certainly for many people there are many doubts about the individualistic character of the Global Master Award, because the academy still feels like one of the judges. The benefits of recognition by the profession outweigh any ideological concerns about the particular incentive structure. We live in a world where each person must have a certain amount of wealth to create the kind of recognition of the profession that he or she deserves.
